Loving Bayleigh (Short Story)
I was at the tack sale because I had a horse again for the first time in 25 years, a Sorrel Quarter horse mare named Fancy. When I was young, I had several horses but after starting a family, I sold them due to lack of time to ride and compete any longer. I was there to find tack for my new horse, Fancy and I had in fact bought a pink halter at a good price for her. However, the horses would be up for auction next and I told my husband that I just wanted to watch. The second horse that came in the rink caught my eye though. I heard my husband telling me not to buy another horse as I put up my hand to bid. I couldn't stop myself. Her eyes were gentle and her soul was calling my name. I saw a big man put up his hand after I did. He was bidding against me. Who was he? He may be the meat man. I knew a meat buyer was there at the sale. She was more than someone's dinner and I knew I had to save her. Once again I put up my hand, but my money was dwindling away and my husband was fuming. I might not be able to rescue her from death after all. This time the meat man didn't bid against me. I breathed a sigh of relief. The Palomino Dun Quarter Horse Mare was mine. She was a golden blonde like me, but unlike me she had a black stripe down her back. Her smooth gait and her beauty astounded me! I jumped off the bleachers and ran back to meet her, with my husband trailing close behind.
She was more beautiful up close than from my seat in the bleachers. I looked into her kind eyes and said calm down girl, I am yours now. It would be a while before she considered herself to be mine though as I would soon find out.
